Travelling has always interested me, and eventually I plan to explore more of the world. Until that day arrives, however, there are fascinating places to be seen within very easy driving distance of home.
For example, a short journey west along County Road Nine, Northumberland County, brings you to the Richardson Conservation Area and lookout, which affords lovely views of the surrounding countryside. We took a drive there recently and I took this just as the setting sun flushed the early spring landscape with soft pink light.
Nearby, we came upon this strangely eerie place; a quiet clearing with many old and broken gravestones collected together and preserved on mounds of concrete. An inscription in the cement at the base of this strange monument explained that in 1987 the old Orono Cemetery had been moved to this location. As I explored the remote little site, a meadowlark was singing joyously away in a field across the road. You can see in this picture something misty and ghostlike hovering above the stones - but no, not a spirit....merely a smudge on the camera lens. I would not have been surprised however to catch sight of a ghost. Some of these grave markers are really old, dating from the 1850s.
At the opposite end of the county is one of my favorite places - and how lucky am I that it's only a half-hour drive away from home! This little Provincial Park is located on a small peninsula in Lake Ontario, and seems to contain within it's compact area many different habitats - there's marsh-land which is home to a myriad of birds and animals, deciduous forest, and of course, lots of shoreline. I can't seem to figure out how to size photos here yet, so I'm just including a pic of the Presquille lighthouse, but there is plenty more attractive landscape to enjoy here.
Thus ends my sneak peek of Northumberland County!
